Autism is an infectious disease

The cause, Altered conditions in the gut due to deteriorating quality of intestinal flora in the general population. Poor quality gut flora is passed from mother to baby.

We are born sterile but with no pre-existing bacteria to demand competition, bugs ingested during the birth process colonise the infant gut within days.
We acquire our gut flora from mucus in the birth canal and mothers milk.
Such is the growth a newborn is soon accommodating a mass of microbes. The cells of which collectively outnumber human cells by at least 10 to 1.
In fact by cell count we quickly become 99 percent bacteria.

The acquisition of our commensal flora that is, flora that has co-evolved with humans in the first few days after birth is nothing short of a metamorphosis. At the end of the process we become an amalgam of human and microbial cells. The partnership is vitally important to our well being,
it’s true to say we are as healthy as our commensal flora allows us to be.

The symbiotic relationship with our gut flora drives our Immune system. In addition to balancing our immunology, bacteria perform countless other
physiologic tasks

Update June 2010

Professor Jeremy Nicholson, has found that Children with autism have very unusual gut microbes .unfortunately he fails to make the association with the known health problems with inappropriate gut flora

Abstract
Recent studies have highlighted a connection between infection during pregnancy and the increased risk of autism in the offspring. Parallel studies of cerebral spinal fluid, blood and postmortem brains reveal an ongoing, hyper-responsive inflammatory-like state in many young as well as adult autism subjects. There are also indications of gastrointestinal problems in at least a subset of autistic children. Work on the maternal infection risk factor using animal models indicates that aspects of brain and peripheral immune dysregulation can begin during fetal development and continue through adulthood. The offspring of infected or immune-activated dams also display cardinal behavioral features of autism, as well as neuropathology consistent with that seen in human autism. These rodent models are proving useful for the study of pathogenesis and gene-environment interactions as well as for the exploration of potential therapeutic strategies.

This symbiotic partnership is not confined to the animal kingdom .Plants have evolved a similar relationship with bacteria and also pass down via their seeds the very specialised bacteria

a new symbiosis between bacteria and plants a new symbiosis between bacteria and plants

Read here how plants using symbiotic bacteria can grow without soil and in fact are capable of growing on nothing but bare rock.

The question how many species of plants/trees rely on specialised symbiotic bacteria to survive and how sensitive are these hugely important bacteria to antibiotics in the environment.

A new disease condition of oak trees, Acute Oak Decline (AOD), is taking hold in Britain. Two hundred million trees are at risk. Other trees are acquiring diseases Bleeding Canker of Horse Chestnut, larch trees are succumbing to disease, this is unprecedented ..The media are asking questions, namely what’s going on? .. . A similar situation exists in the USA where oaks and other woody hosts are being decimated by a disease dubbed Sudden Oak Death..A coincidence ..it’s doubtful

Black bleeds ,Acute Oak Decline: Black bleeds ,Acute Oak DeclineExtensive stem bleeding. ,Acute Oak Decline:

We now know that antibiotics have effectively and comprehensively contaminated our environment . evidence of increasing antibiotic resistance of soil microbes has been revealed by a team of scientists in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands they are reporting disturbing evidence that soil microbes have become progressively more resistant to antibiotics over the last 60 years. Surprisingly, this trend continues despite apparent more stringent rules on use of antibiotics in medicine and agriculture, and improved sewage treatment technology that broadly improves water quality in surrounding environments.

The argument for plant/tree immunity being downgraded by antibiotic modified soil bacteria is strengthened by the research from the Molecular Ecology Group, below is taken from their research.

The Role of Beneficial Bacteria in Disease Suppressive soils

Soil is of utmost importance for a variety of key functions that sustain life on earth, including nutrient cycling and plant growth. Soil microorganisms play an essential role in these processes and represent an enormous untapped resource for discovering novel traits and genes. In the past decades, specific soils have been identified worldwide in which beneficial microorganisms guard plants against infections by soilborne pathogens. This natural disease suppressiveness of soils is induced by successive cropping of susceptible host plants followed by a severe disease outbreak. To date, however, the molecular mechanisms underlying this ‘immune’ response of suppressive soils are largely unknown. Culture-based approaches used so far have led to the identification of only a few microbial species that contribute to natural disease suppression, but have not taken into account the vast majority and complex diversity of the indigenous soil microflora.

Suppression of plant diseases and pests by beneficial soil bacteria: signals and molecular mechanisms

Another important mechanism is the indirect inhibition of the pathogen by bacterial stimulation of defence responses in the plant host. In our work, we rely on the model bacterium P. fluorescens strain CHA0 which displays a remarkably broad spectrum of biocontrol activity against some of the major soil-borne plant pathogens on various mono- and dicotyledonous crop plants. Remarkably, strain CHA0 while colonizing only the roots can also provide plant protection against leaf pathogens by triggering systemic defense mechanisms.

The understanding of the symbiotic relationship with our microbes can at best be described as in its infancy

The relationship has been dubbed
the black Hole of medicine .The fact is we know next to nothing on how and why we react to microbes. We can only get an inkling on what’s happening by observing reactions of specially bred germ free animals and empirical treatments.[see Normal Flora]

To illustrate that a new study suggests that just one common intestinal bacterium, Bacteroides fragilis , can be responsible for the production of a
particular class of immune cells the T lymphocyte cells, this action maybe unique to the bacterium .The question must be what role do the other 500 or so commensal bacteria play ?

Update July 2009…The development of key immune cells [Th17 cells -- CD4-positive cells that have a potent pro-inflammatory effect-- are normally in a balance with another population of CD4-positive cells, dubbed Foxp3-positive cells, which play a regulatory role in the immune system.] is triggered by specific types of bacteria in the gut, a finding that could lead to new therapies for diseases of inflammation, researchers here said.

In the absence of bacteria from the cytophaga-flavobacter-bacteroidetes phylum -- or CFB, for short -- the immune cells are also not present, at least in mice, according to Dan Littman, M.D., Ph.D., of New York University, and colleagues.

Every autistic child has a vastly different gut flora from what is considered normal

Every autistic child has a yeast dominant gut dysbiosis. That
is an overgrowth of Yeast, usually Candida Albicans. That overgrowth alters the environment in the gut, which in turn promotes the growth of
bacteria normally found in the gut in small non-pathogenic quantities. Toxins generated by the overgrowth lead to a cascade of events; The brain and the gut have parallel pharmacologic regulatory systems that are also interlinked Gastrointestinal disturbances coincide with mental acuity and emotional stability. This has been shown to be the case among children along the autistic spectrum. Immune dysfunction and gastrointestinal problems are interrelated.

“Psychiatrist to gastroenterologist: "Isn't it surprising how many brain neurotransmitters are also in the gut?" Gastroenterologist to psychiatrist: "Not at all, but it sure is interesting how many gut neurotransmitters are in the brain."

In adults the full blown condition affects many thousands, unfortunately mainstream medicine does not recognise the condition. There are however specialist doctors who treat yeast dominant “Gut Dysbiosis” [see references “Dr Cranton" and treatment section "Dr Myhill" ]

The Yeast Connection , By Dr William CrookThe Yeast Connection , By Dr William Crook

Poor quality gut flora is progressive. The individual becomes primed for yeast overgrowth soon after birth with inherent poor flora. But the final straw –
the trigger in the now susceptible individual is often the insult of a vaccine containing toxins,[additives called adjuvants], this together with the immunologic challenge the biological contents of the vaccine presents overwhelms the IS [immune system]. Vaccines, like all medicines, have inherent potential side effects, especially the older ones. They are a stress on the patient's immune system, demanding it gear up and perform some work.
In some instances, they can cause transient immunosuppression or autoimmunity — confused antibodies that can't differentiate invader from "self." When immunity drops Candida will grow.

Update Nov 2009 Expert Pediatrician Exposes Vaccine Myths

Most children in the west have undergone treatment with broad-spectrum antibiotics before vaccinations this also inpacts on gut flora.

Multiple Vaccines ..The Risks

The principle behind vaccines represent one of the most important medical advances in human history ..But have we taken for granted our immune systems ability to gear up and cope with the ever-increasing demands of multiple vaccinations… Our immune system is a resource and like any resource can be overwhelmed ..

The current U.S. immunization schedule calls for children to get 48 doses of 14 vaccines by the time they’re just 6 years old. By age 18, federal public health officials say they should have received a total of 69 doses of 16 vaccines from day of birth to age 18.

One vaccine injected into a 13-pound, 2-month-old infant is equivalent to 10 doses of the same in a 130-pound adult.
Would any adult concede to being injected with 360 doses of vaccines within a couple of years’ span; equal to one injection every other day for two years?

Public health officials have NEVER proven that it is indeed safe to inject this number and volume of vaccines into infants.

The graph below paints the picture. It shows that vaccines were contributory in autism in Japanese children and will be doing the same to children around the world. The number of Japanese children developing autism rose and fell in direct proportion to the number of children vaccinated each year The accompanying web site gives a credible explanation on the apparent discrepancy with other contradictory statistics .. Obviously there are other contributory factors or all vaccinated children would develop the autistic condition ..The other factors are as per the information within this site

Update April 2010 The obvious political verdict against Dr Wakefield was an insult to us all,..Dr Wakefied puts his case in this discussion with Dr Mercola … Why Medical Authorities Went to Such Extremes to Silence Dr. Andrew Wakefield

A study in Yokohoma, Japan, where MMR vaccinations were banned in 1993 in favour of single vaccinations, it was found that rates of autism continued to rise despite the ban.
The result is widely held as evidence that the triple MMR and vaccines in general are not implicated in autism …

Wrong conclusion .. they should have realised as per Dr Wakefield “ALL” vaccines are suspect. MMR vaccines taken as single shots are still capable of triggering Autism
. And generally autism rates have increased since the removal of thimerosal from vaccines
